We love this Austin, but sometimes we’ve just got to get away for a fresh outlook on things. Tired of all the major events drawing hundreds of thousands upon Austin week after week? Why not hop in the car and head two hours east to Houston for some recreation at the newest hotspots in town?

The city is back in business after Hurricane Harvey with a spirit stronger than ever. What to do? Leave that to us to plan all the experiences for an unforgettable weekend…by visiting great places that range from an international flair to the comforts that are Austin-like. You’ll arrive before lunch on Friday and leave after waking up Sunday so you have time to recoup in the afternoon before you starting the work-week anew.

When: 8 A.M. Guys love a great road-trip and heading to Houston is a quick and easy jaunt at approximately two and a half hours

How: The easiest way to get to Houston is taking 71 to I-10

Bonus: Since you are headed out of Austin during rush hour, it is a reverse commute meaning you’ll be in Houston before 11 A.M.

Lucienne

Why: Because after a day of work and travel, making it an early night with a full day coming tomorrow just makes sense

GETTING IN A WORKOUT:

The Fitness Center at Hotel Alessandra

Where: Fitness Center, 5th floor of the Hotel Alessandra – Address: 1070 Dallas Street Houston, TX 77002

Why: So you can dine and drink at Houston’s most hip establishments guilt-free

Workout: 3.5/20/45. Treadmill at 3.5 miles per hour, 20% incline for 45 minutes. Hold onto the treadmill and it’s a great way to give your arms a slight toning as well

Calories Burned: 1,100 (Yes, you read that right, 1,100!)

Post Workout: Take a dip in the Palm Springs-inspired pool that overlooks the fitness center

BRUNCH WITH FRIENDS:

Xochi

Where: Xochi – Address: 1777 Walker Street Houston, TX 77010

Why: It is internationally renowned chef Hugo Ortega’s latest creation that is truly five star interior Mexican cuisine

Recommend: Taquitos Dorados, Chiles Rellenos, Memela y Huevos and Xochi Burger

Bonus: Order the Houston Strong Margarita. One dollar of each margarita you buy goes to Harvey Relief. Our table of five ordered a round. Upon serving, five of the staff stood behind each member of our party, shook the margaritas in front of us and poured them into our glasses in unison

TAKE IT BACK TO YOUR PLACE:

Where: Bardot At The Hotel Alessandra (Just a half mile walk from Xochi)

Why: In addition to the window side tables, there are several mid-century seating vignettes perfect for groups of 5 or 6

Recommend: Bellini, Belvedere and Tonic, Makers Mark on the Rocks

Bonus: Who says night caps after a great meal are only reserved for dinner?

NIGHT OF NOSH IN THE RIVER OAKS DISTRICT:

Le Colonial

Where To Start: Le Colonial – Address 4444 Westheimer Road G-140 Houston, TX 77027

Get There By: Ride Share – Approximately $15 each way on a Saturday evening from downtown

Why: You have two different groups of friends to meet, so why not do shared appetizers all night instead of one big meal?

Recommend: Banh Uot, Ca Song, Cha Gio Chay, Rau Xao, Sui Chao Chien

Bonus: We asked for just a bowl of fried rice (not on the menu) to share for the table. They happily complied and perfectly complimented our dishes

Toulousse

Where To Nightcap: Toulouse 4444 Westheimer Road E-100 Houston, TX 77027

Why: Vibrant, full of well-heeled people with al fresco and indoor seating

Recommend: Ahi Tuna Tower, Crispy Calamari, Plateau De Fromage, Roasted Beet Carpaccio

Bonus: They have one in The Domain In Austin too so you do not have to travel 200 miles to enjoy the next time you have a craving – or want to be a hero of a great new place to have a nightcap

SUNDAY

HEAD HOME AND RELAX

When: After you wake up and before checkout

How: The easiest way to get home is taking I-10 to 71

Bonus: Since it’s only a two-hour drive, you have most of the afternoon to chill and relax for the week ahead
